CHAPTER 25

Edna Archer stepped over the dried-out shell of the carriage driver. William Wellsby’s short-sworded walking cane still protruded from his chest, its blade wedged between the man’s brittle twig-like ribs. She had skewered him like a suckling pig and sucked the life from his lips as his body quivered in its final throws of life. He had provided her with an invigorating tonic, but no more. She did not have the time to indulge her craving. She could see the hunched figure of Wellsby House’s groundskeeper farther down the lane, so the carriage driver’s death, while not painless, was swifter than she would have liked. Having left the carriage door open, William’s corpse staring through unseeing eyes at the land he had so famously owned, a look of terror twisting his features, an invigorated Edna walked briskly across the field. Within seconds she disappeared into a swirling snowfall of her own making.

A few minutes later, the groundskeeper’s despairing cry brought a smile to her rejuvenated features. The meddlesome William Wellsby was dead. Grief had touched Wellsby House and the village of Smith’s Booth, and she sensed Calena’s vessel, Isabella, was awaking to her destiny. Soon they would be able to summon their master, and he would show his gratitude towards her, letting her rule at his left hand. There was a lot for Edna Archer to smile about, and with a younger, more supple face, she was beginning to get good at it.

She walked on through the snow, enjoying the bleak desolation of midwinter. She looked at the sky and smiled, despite it still being early in the afternoon, the encroaching darkness had become a delicious metaphor for what was to come.
